PLAY ALONG:
Would You Rather?

July 2, 2024

In this special episode, I take you on a 'Would You Rather' journey with my friend Cynthia. Recorded on the road, we explore the Stans, debate between iconic destinations, and share our unique travel experiences. Join us and play along!

Hello! I’m coming to you from the road. As some of you might know, I’m currently traveling through the fascinating lands ending in “stan.” My journey has been incredible, filled with new experiences and breathtaking landscapes. Last week, I shared a diary entry from Kiva while I was still on the move, and this week, I’ve got something a bit special for you—something quicker for me to do than our regular episodes, but just as fun.

During my travels, I decided to record a game of “Would You Rather” with my good friend Cynthia. You might remember we did something similar on a road trip through Saudi Arabia, and this time, we’re recording right from our rental car on a bumpy road. You might hear the hum of the tires and the occasional rattle as we drive along.

Joining me in this adventure is Cynthia, who has been traveling with me through the “stans.” We’ve covered four countries so far—Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and now Kyrgyzstan. Fun fact: “stan” means “land,” so you could technically call Switzerland “Switzerstan.” Interesting, right?

So, let’s dive into our game of “Would You Rather,” powered by some intriguing questions from Chat GPT. Feel free to play along and let me know if you agree or disagree with our choices!

Question 1:

HIKE Machu Picchu or Torres del Paine?

Cynthia and I both love big mountains, so when we were asked if we’d rather hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru or the Torres del Paine circuit in Chile, it was a tough choice. I’ve been to Machu Picchu, though I didn’t hike the trail, and I’ve never been to the southern part of Chile. So, I’d choose Torres del Paine for a new adventure.

Cynthia has spent time in both areas and loves the less touristy, stunning landscapes of Patagonia in southern Chile. She’d pick Torres del Paine too, for its spectacular mountains and serene beauty.

Question 2:

Hot Air Balloon Ride in Cappadocia or Northern Lights in Finland?

When given the choice between a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia in Turkey or watching the northern lights from a glass igloo in Finland, I was torn. I’ve done hot air ballooning a few times and would love to experience Cappadocia, but seeing the northern lights is a dream of mine. Despite several trips to Greenland and northern Norway, I’ve never caught the elusive lights. So, my pick would be the glass igloo in Finland.

Cynthia, on the other hand, finds the idea of watching the northern lights from a glass igloo absolutely enchanting. She loves big mountains and has experienced hot air balloon rides in other places, but the uniqueness of a glass igloo under the aurora borealis wins her vote.

Question 3:

Camp Under the Stars in Wadi Rum or the Sahara?

Next, we pondered whether we’d rather camp under the stars in Wadi Rum, Jordan, or the Sahara Desert in Morocco. For me, Jordan holds a special charm. I visited Petra on a cruise and felt an immediate connection to the place and its people. Camping in Wadi Rum and gazing at the stars sounds perfect.

Cynthia agrees. She’s visited Jordan’s south and Petra and is drawn to Wadi Rum’s unique landscape and history. Both of us feel Jordan’s magic and are eager to return.

Question 4:

Rio Carnival or Holi Festival of Colours?

Choosing between Rio Carnival in Brazil and the Holi Festival in India was interesting. Cynthia isn’t a big fan of India or having things thrown at her, so she’d prefer the vibrant, music-filled Rio Carnival. She recently experienced the third-largest carnival in Trinidad and Tobago and loved it, so Rio is on her list.

I’d love to experience Rio Carnival too, but the Holi Festival’s colourful chaos in India fascinates me. Despite its intensity, I’m drawn to the idea of celebrating amidst a riot of colours.

Question 5:

Pyramids of Giza or Moai Statues on Easter Island?

This one was easier for me. Having already visited Egypt and seen the Pyramids of Giza, I’d choose to explore the Moai statues on Easter Island. It’s a place I’ve long wanted to see, and the allure of those mysterious statues calls to me.

Cynthia shares my sentiment. While she enjoyed her trips to Egypt and finds it worth revisiting, Easter Island’s unique appeal makes it her choice as well.

Question 6:

Fjords of New Zealand or Scottish Highlands?

We both agree on this one—New Zealand’s fjords win hands down. Our cruise from Australia to New Zealand gave us a glimpse of the stunning fjords, or “sounds,” as they’re called locally. The breathtaking scenery, countless waterfalls, and serene landscapes left us in awe.

While the Scottish Highlands are beautiful too, New Zealand’s fjords are on another level of spectacular.

Question 7:

Scenic Train Ride Through Swiss Alps or Canadian Rockies?

For our final question, we debated between a scenic train ride through the Swiss Alps or the Rocky Mountains in Canada. Cynthia has experienced the Swiss Alps by train and loves the majestic views, but hasn’t done a train ride in the Rockies.

I, on the other hand, would choose the Canadian Rockies. Having not yet explored that part of the world, it would be a new and exciting adventure for me. Both options are incredibly tempting, but the Rockies’ allure wins for me.
